Biography
American painter. He studied at the John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, at the Chicago Institute of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Between 1960 and 1962, he produced a series of figures Hermes with enormous phalluses made of metal and wood. In 1966, he started using the word "love" as the main motif in his works. In 1968, he participated in documenta 4, in Kassel and, in 1973, he designed a stamp for the United States Post Office. He met Ellsworth Kelly, who had a major influence in the development of his artistic carer. His images and screen prints are often considered Pop Art. Indiana also developed a particular style of Hard-Edge painting using words, letters and symbols.
