Biography
German painter born in Bleckede. In 1963/64 studied theatrical set design at the Düsseldorf Academy. Joined Beuys' class 1965-66: Happenings with social and political content at the Academy. 1968/69: Appeared under the name of Lidl in political actions at the Academy in Düsseldorf and other cities. Later began to produce pictures and posters heavily influenced by social realism. In 1972 and 1982 took part in "Documenta" 5 and 7 in Kassel. 1976: Organized happenings in East Berlin with A.R.Penck. 1976 (-1983): Started work on "Café Deutschland", a series of paintings, rich in allusive symbolism, on the theme of divided Germany. 1981: Guest professor at the Academy in Stockholm. 1997: Received the world's most lucrative award, the Marco Prize from the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Monterrey (Mexico). 2005-2006: Retropective in The Neue National galerie in Berlin. Immendorff stands for politically active art.
