Italian painter, designer and sculptor, began exhibiting his work in 1971, gaining a reputation as a figurative painter in the Italian Transavanguardia group together with Chia, Clemente and Paladino. His paintings consist, essentially, of simple, economical images with luminous primary or secondary colours. The flat, compressed image of space in his early painting came to be replaced by profound illusions of cavernous space. These are, at times, enriched by other materials such as iron, neon or burnt wood. In 1982 and 1987, he took part in "documenta" 7 and 8 in Kassel and, in 1986, he had his first major retrospective at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, as well as a one-man show at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
