British painter. From 1948-50 studied at Kingston Art School, and 1951-54 at Royal College of Art, during which time he lived in Italy six months. In 1954 first one-person exhibition, Beaux-Arts Gallery, London. In 1955-56 taught at Carlisle School of Art. Participated in 1956 and 1958 at the Venice Biennale. In 1957 won John Moores Painting Prize. First exhibition in US, French & Company, New York, 1958. In 1971 elected Royal Academician. Retrospective, South London Art Gallery, London 1984.
