The American sculptor, photographer and performance artist, Bruce Nauman began his studies in Mathematics and only later moved into the field of art. He attended the University of Wisconsin (1960-64) and the University of California in Davis (1965-66), after which he exhibited some enigmatic sculptures in fibre glass. From 1968 to 1982, he took part in documenta 4 and 7, in Kassel. In 1991, he received the Max Beckmann Prize from the city of Frankfurt. A year later, he took part in documenta 9 and, in 1993 and 1996, he had two major retrospectives, at the Reina Sofia Art Centre in Madrid and at the Kunsthaus in Zurich. His multimedia art is an art of exploration: he uses himself and his own body as a means of questioning the parameters of art and the role of the artist, thus being considered the pioneer of Body Art.
