Was born in Oporto, and in 1951 settled in Lisbon. Self-taught artist, his intellectual training was influenced by literary and philosophical values which he carried over into his artistic activity. His work in the plastic arts was accompanied by theoretical studies which had a vital role in clarifying his steps forward and in questioning the status of art, the artist and the critic. In 1970, he collected his theoretical texts and published them under the heading “Critical Texts foir Combat in the Vanguard of the Visual Arts”. He is attracted by the Surrealism since his early works. In 1957 he received the “Drawing Prize” at the First Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Plastic Arts Exhibition. Lives in S. Paulo, Brazil, from 1957 to 1962, where he developed a gestural painting. His work is frequently organized in series that develops the idea of negation in the work of art.
